Life Lesson #005: People are like orchids and cacti
This is just a kind reminder
People are like orchids and cacti.
A good leader should know how to prepare the environment for them to thrive.
– Anna Cieśnik
On one of the webinars, I’ve heard this idea, that:
People are like orchids and cacti.
But there are many different kinds of flowers in between. We usually want to threat all of them in the same way, even if they need different things as a baseline.
The point is:
Some need a little more care, others don’t.
Some need a little support and less sun to bloom beautifully.
Others prefer a harsh environment and plenty of sun.
If you treat everyone the same, some will never have the chance to thrive.
A good leader should know this and support everyone in the team.
What if a leader (or you as a leader) can’t change the environment?
The answer is often a hard truth:
When you cannot change the environment, change your environment.
– Anna Cieśnik
Put simply, if you are not able to influence the environment you’re in (at work, at home, or anywhere else) the best solution might be to move on.
Remember, you are the main character of your own life. Don’t waste energy blaming others. You are the one responsible for making your life better.
Ask for help if you need it. Be honest with yourself. And then, just move on.
Do you remember when you were a kid learning to ride a bike - you fell, you got up, and you tried again. This is no different.
Get up and move on!
